I still remember my first journal.
It was bound in fabric, cream-colored with bright pink and purple flowers. I took it with me everywhere, girl of 8 that I was, filling its pages with stories, drawings, frustrations and dreams.
In the decades since, the ancient practice of putting pen to paper has helped me through many a challenging time, offering clarity and comfort whenever I needed it. More than that, journaling allows for a strange yet lovely companionship, a way to sit down with myself and get to know the mind beneath its conscious bloomings and buzzings.
It is in this spirit of getting to know and befriend oneself that I offer up the beginner's guide to journaling.
This guide contains a few strategies I use to bring more power to my journaling habit, along with 30 days of writing prompts to get you started. The prompts are designed to be both illuminating and accessible, posing questions that are fundamental to being human yet seldom pondered in modern life.
I'll be honest--I've fallen a little in love with this guide. I created it as much for myself as for you. Writing has always held a kind of sacredness for me, an almost magical way of helping us transcend the world we think we know and revealing, layer by shimmering layer, entirely new possibilities and potential ways of being.
So I've decided to embark on a little challenge, and I would so love it if you'd me. For the next 30 days, I will work through each of the journaling questions I've posed in the guide. I'll offer a short recap weekly, and at the end of the 30 days, I'll share what I've learned from one month of daily journaling.
